(Life and Death 20 Ma ago on the Continental Shelf)

About 20 million years ago, small creatures such as worms and shrimps built their homes in the sand on the sea floor of the continental shelf, at water depth ranging from 5 to 30 meters. Worms built U-shaped tubes where they collected food in one end, and excreted their wastes in the other end. Meanwhile, shrimps built a maze-liked burrow system to hide from predators. Stingrays can use electricity to precisely locate their prey even when it is well protected in its burrows. By breathing out a strong water flow, they destroy the burrows and flush out the prey, leaving a bowl-shaped pit on the sea floor. Beyond the limits of time and space, animation is used in this popular science project to introduce how stingrays hunted shrimps hiding in their burrows, providing another aspect for the audience to observe the scenes that would be difficult to capture with conventional films and textbooks!
